About White Sesame Seeds
Sesame seeds have been used by cooks for thousands of years and are especially valued for their high oil content. There are four distinct colors of sesame seed — white, black, brown, and red. White sesame seeds have a flavor that is savory and slightly nutty. They are perfect for adding a little crunch and some visual texture to your dish.
We also carry black sesame seeds which have a slightly different flavor and more of a mineral aroma.
White sesame seeds have many uses, but their biggest claim to fame is probably the McDonald’s sesame seed bun. Interestly, McDonald’s purchases about 75% of Mexico’s sesame crop to be used in making the iconic fast food item. Our sesame seeds come from India.
White sesame seeds are also used to make tahini — a paste that’s used primarily in Middle Eastern food. Tahini is a major ingredient in hummus and baba ghanoush. White sesame seeds are also an ingredient in the popular Middle Eastern spice blend, Za’atar.
