About Sweet Curry Powder
Curry powder is one of the most popular spice blends in the world. The combination and ratio of spices used to make any curry powder will vary by blend and supplier, creating a wide range of possible flavors, colors, and levels of heat. Our Sweet Curry Powder is made without turmeric which is unusual — this blend is light and mild with a bit of sweetness and is more of a sweet red curry than a sweet yellow curry.
Curry powder is often associated with Indian cooking, but this is based in a historical misunderstanding. In the 1800s, the East India Company and thousands of British soldiers had set up shop in India. They enjoyed the Indian cuisine very much, but their misguided interpretation was that every dish was “curry”. When they returned to England, they brought with them the version of Indian food we often see today: a vegetable stew with yellow or red sauce served over rice.
Sweet curry powder has many applications including soups, stews, chili recipes, grilled meats, dal, and vegetable stir fry. It can also be used in tuna salad recipes, egg custards, sweet pastas, or steamed mussels. You’ll find it in Indian cooking as well as Jamaican, Middle Eastern, South African, and Southeast Asian cuisines.
