About Poppy Seeds
Poppy seeds are used by cooks in many cultures, especially as a baking ingredient. These Dutch blue poppy seeds are cultivated in Holland and are considered to be the highest quality available. They are tiny, round seeds and slate blue in color. Poppy seeds have a flavor profile that is nutty and slightly fruity.
While poppy seeds are known as “opium seeds” for their use in pharmaceutical drugs, culinary poppy seeds have very low levels of opiates. Their seed pods contain the majority of the opiates and we’re only using the seeds themselves for cooking purposes.
Poppy seeds can be used in cakes, cookies, breads, muffins, strudels, candies, and other baked goods. Sometimes bakers will grind the poppy seeds to create a pastry filling. They can also be sprinkled on veggie dishes and pastas or used in salad dressings. Occasionally, poppy seeds are dry-roasted and ground to use as an ingredient in curry paste.
