About Onion Powder
Onion powder is made from dehydrated onions and has a strong onion flavor and aroma. It’s useful in situations where you want to add the flavor of onion without the texture — soups, sauces, spreads, and spice blends to name a few. Onion powder can also be a lifesaver when you don’t have fresh onions on hand.
Our white onion powder is made from California white onions, dehydrated and ground. Fresh onions have a high moisture content, so it takes about 9 lbs of fresh onions to make each pound of dehydrated onion powder.
When cooking with onion powder, think of it in terms of rehydrating the onion and be sure your dish has enough moisture to distribute the concentration of flavor evenly. If your dish doesn’t have much liquid, try rehydrating the onion powder before adding (soak in a small dish of water for 10-15 minutes).
We believe that when it’s possible, fresh onions are almost always ideal. But while some cooks view onion powder as a lazy alternative to the real thing, we still think it has its place in every kitchen pantry. Sometimes you’re finishing up a dish and realize it’s missing something...if that something is onion, you need a quick fix. You could chop and cook more onions, or you could just add a little onion powder!
Onion powder vs fresh onion:
If a recipe calls for 1 medium onion, you can substitute 1 Tablespoon of onion powder. Dehydrated ingredients have a concentrated flavor, so less is needed to achieve your result.
