About Nigella Sativa Seeds
The nigella seed spice is growing in popularity due to its visual appeal as a garnish (think Instagram) and the added crunch it brings. Nigella sativa seeds have a flavor that is peppery and somewhat bitter with an earthy aroma. Some describe the flavor as being similar to oregano.
Nigella sativa is also known as black caraway. It is sometimes incorrectly called black cumin and may be substituted for actual black cumin seed.
Black nigella seeds are commonly used in Middle Eastern and Indian cuisine as well as some European dishes. They are often toasted for use in curries and veggie dishes and they’re a common ingredient for naan. Here in the U.S., nigella seeds are used as a topping for salads, egg dishes, avocado toast, flatbreads and other baked goods.
