About Herbs de Provence
Herbs de Provence (or herbes de Provence) is a popular French blend of herbs that complement one another beautifully. Like many traditional seasonings, there are many variations of Herbs de Provence ingredients — ours is a blend of basil, thyme, marjoram, chervil, rosemary, and lavender. The flavor is light, floral, herbal and quite aromatic. The inclusion of lavender is more common in the U.S.; the French versions typically do not use lavender.
Herbs de Provence, also known as Provencal herbs, gets its name from the Provence region of southeast France where this type of herb mixture is typical. The cuisine of this region has long used a combination of herbs casually referred to as herbes de Provence; it wasn’t until the 1970s that spice merchants began to package and market this blend to consumers.
Herbs de Provence works well with chicken dishes, grilled fish, roast beef, and Cornish hens. It can also be used to bring unique flavor to soups, stews, sauces, veggie dishes, roasted potatoes, and artisan cheese. Add the herbs early in the cooking process to allow the flavors to fully develop.
