About Ground Mustard Seed
Ground yellow mustard seed is most notably used to make classic American mustard (the ballpark variety). Ground mustard seed may also be referred to as mustard flour, mustard powder, or dry mustard. Ground yellow mustard has a sharp, tangy flavor and a pungent, earthy aroma.
Yellow mustard seeds come from the white mustard plant (the seeds themselves are pale yellow). Other types of mustard seeds are: brown mustard and black mustard. Brown and black seeds have a hotter, more pungent flavor profile. Yellow mustard, while comparatively mild, has its own very distinct mustard flavor.
Classic yellow mustard is made by combining water, vinegar, ground mustard seed, and various other seasonings. Other popular condiments that use dry ground mustard include Honey Mustard, English Pub Mustard, and Russian Hot Sweet Mustard. Ground yellow mustard is also frequently used in salad dressings, deviled egg recipes, barbecue sauces, hollandaise sauce, and various curries.
