Spices Used in Desserts
Popular Dessert Spices
It’s easy to forget that there are plenty of spices used in desserts when we’re laser-focused on all that wonderful buttery, sugary goodness. But, make no mistake, spices (and some herbs) are crucial ingredients in many of your favorite sweet dishes. The most popular baking spices are arguably ground cinnamon and nutmeg for their contribution to various pies, cakes, muffins, breads, cookies, and so much more. However, when it comes to dessert spices, this is only the beginning!
For instance, star anise is used to make delicious jams, pudding, cakes, and tarts — a little goes a long way in adding just a hint of sweet licorice. Cloves bring a warm, fruity flavor to festive sweets like gingerbread, eggnog, pumpkin pie, and apple cider. Cardamom pods might seem out of place in our dessert spice collection, but they’re actually used quite often in European and Scandinavian desserts — cakes, cookies, muffins, breads, custards, and much more.
Other popular spices used in desserts include ground ginger, cinnamon sticks, mace, allspice, dried orange peel, amchur (mango powder), and culinary lavender. Keep an eye on this collection as we continue adding new new dessert spices!
